A black bear den in Pike County is the focus of a new 24-hour livestream from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

It marks the first time since 2021 the commission is offering viewers an up-close look inside a black bear den. The commission said while black bears den every year, few do so in known spots where cameras can be installed.

Luckily, the opportunity arose this year.

“While all of our wildlife livestreams are popular with viewers, there’s nothing like watching and listening to bear cubs as they begin to explore their surroundings and, ultimately, emerge from the den with their mothers to see their new world in Penn’s Woods,” said Steve Smith, the agency’s Information and Education director.

Pennsylvania’s black bears usually are born in January and begin walking in about 8 weeks. They leave the den when 3 months old.

In 2019 during the black bear livestream, bears left the den on April 11, while the departure date in 2021 was March 24, according to the commission.

The bear den livestream brings the total to four commission livestreams planned to run into the spring.

The ever-popular Hanover, Pa. Eagle Cam is back as well as the Farm County Eagle Livestream. And the agency's Snow Goose Cam got up and running at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, ahead of the snow goose migration through Pennsylvania.

All of the livestreams can be accessed through the Pennsylvania Game Commission's website.

The commission partners with HDOnTap and Comcast Business to provide the livestreams.
