A postal workers local union has endorsed state Rep. Brendan Boyle of Northeast Philadelphia in the already crowded Democratic primary for U.S. House in the 13th congressional district.
Boyle, who has built his campaign so far on organized labor support, announced the backing of American Postal Workers Union Local 7048 on Tuesday. The local represents about 500 employees of the U.S. Postal Service.
“We are proud to support a true economic progressive voice for working people,” Local 7048 President Vince Tarducci said in a statement.
Boyle also boasts the support of: IBEW Local 98, Sprinklerfitters Local 692, Plumbers Local 690, Steamfitters Local 420, Operating Engineers 542, Iron Workers 401, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Teamsters, Communications Workers Local 13000, Insulators Local 14, Bricklayers Local 1, Transport Workers Union 234, Boilermakers Local 1, Sheet Metal Workers 19, Unite Here, APWU Local 7098, PGW Local 686. In addition to those endorsements, and FOP Lodge 5, the city police union.
The 13th District includes territory in Montgomery County and in Northeast Philadelphia. Boyle is counting on labor support, the backing of city Democratic chairman U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, and ward leaders in the Philadelphia portion of the district.
In other PA-13 primary news, former U.S. Rep. Marjorie Margolies, attempting a comeback after losing the seat in 1993 for providing the crucial vote for President Bill Clinton’s tax-increasing budget, announced key members of her campaign team last week.
Both hires have ties to Brady, as does Margolies' chief strategist Ken Smukler. Perhaps the chairman is hedging his bets?
Don “D.A.” Jones will lead the effort as senior adviser, Margolies said in a statement. Jones has more than 20 years of state local and national experience as a Democratic operative, including working with Brady and former City Controller Jonathan Saidel; he has also as an adviser on five presidential campaigns.
“D.A. has been with me since my first run for Congress,” Margolies said. “I’m confident he will forge the political alliances for my campaign that will allow us to successfully compete in every neighborhood of the congressional district.”
