Martin Short will headline at the Academy of Music 160th Anniversary Concert and Ball. This time, he may actually get to perform.
This may sound like deja vu. Short was supposed to host the 159th iteration of the white-ties-and-tails event last year but it was cancelled due to Winter Storm Jonas, the first time show did not go on since it began in 1957.
The ostensible point is to raise money for the restoration of the building itself. But lack of money raised is only one reason to mourn this year's ball that wasn't. The event has long been a social leveler and equal access opportunity - a chance, say, for the head of a needy charity to get introduced to a local millionaire philanthropist.
This year's event will be held on January 28, 2017. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate.
Tickets for both the ball and concert are available online at theacademyball.org or by calling the Academy of Music Restoration Fund Office at 215-893-1978. Tickets for the Short-starring concert starting at $75 and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999 or by visiting philorch.org.
