Kelly Ripa unfortunately didn't end her quest for a Live with Kelly and Ryan co-host with area teacher Richard Curtis, but folks who miss the Perkasie, Bucks County local's co-hosting stylings can get their fill all next week on Fox 29.
Curtis will co-host the 9 a.m. hour of Good Day Philadelphia all next week, the station revealed on today's broadcast. The announcement was a surprise — even for Curtis, who got the news live from reporter Bob Kelly during a station visit today to Montgomery County's Souderton Area High School, where Curtis teaches television production.
The teacher's new gig will begin Monday, with Curtis filling in for Good Day Philadelphia co-host Mike Jerrick. Jerrick said today that he would be out Monday as part of the Mother's Day holiday.
"Richard is a natural," Fox 29 news director Jim Driscoll says of Curtis. "You can see the impact he makes in the classroom. He's made the same impact on TV. We can't wait to have him co-host Good Day with us all next week."
Curtis earlier this year co-hosted Live with Kelly several times during Ripa's lengthy co-host search, winning a contest in October last year to co-host the show a single time. Curtis was so well received, Ripa brought him back on for several more appearances. Ultimately, though, Ripa chose Ryan Seacrest as a permanent co-host for her show.
"They're going to do a great job," Curtis said of Seacrest and Ripa on Good Day this morning. "But my new 9 o'clock might be Fox 29."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa — I think you just came up with a good idea," Jerrick replied. "I'm not going to be here Monday, I'm taking the day off. Richard, would you do this? Would you sit in for me on Monday's show?"
"Monday's show you want me in-studio? Are you messing with me right now?" Curtis asked. "I'll see you Monday. I love this idea."
Since today's morning broadcast, Curtis initial Monday co-host role has morphed to an all-week gig. And, as sources at Fox tell us, Curtis could be looking at a longer term on the show, should he be well-received.
Either way, though, as Curtis told Kelly today, he's going to want a little pick-me-up when he arrives early on Monday.
