Shots fired in Gloucester Township, residents find bullets in bed, on dresser

Inquirer staff writer Brittany Talarico reports:

A Gloucester resident was awakened early this morning by a loud bang and discovered a bullet in their bed.

The resident, whose name was not released, lives in the 200 block of Hampshire Road in the Erial section of Gloucester Township.

As police units responded to the area just before 7 a.m., the Gloucester Township Police Dispatch began to receive several phone calls reporting gunshots in the neighborhood.

When police arrived to the first caller's home, they spoke to the resident who told them that the bullet came from the bedroom ceiling and landed on one of the residents as they were sleeping.

According to a police news release this morning, a check of the resident's bedroom revealed a hole in the ceiling above the bed and the bullet on the bed itself. While officers were examining the first area, a second caller, who lived across the street, reported their window had a hole in it and they found a bulled on their bedroom dresser

Following the calls, officers combed the area and discovered nine spent shell casings as well as an unoccupied parked car which was damaged by a bullet. The investigation found the original caller's residence was struck four times. The incident is still under investigation and police think it might be a random act. Anyone with information should contact the Gloucester Township Criminal Investigations Unit at 856-374-5700.
