A tree toppled onto I-295 early today, triggering a chain reaction crash involving a car and a tractor-trailer in Florence Township, State Police said.
The driver of the car had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to the Helene Fuld Medical Center with serious head, neck and back injuries, police said.
Police said the car was soutbound in the center lane of the interstate about 4 a.m. when it ran into the fallen tree.
The car was then hit by a tractor-trailer and both vehicles overturned, police said. The rig driver was not seriously injured.
It took several hours to remove the tree from the highway.
An investigation is continuing.
An earlier report erroneously indicated the tree fell when it was hit by the rig, not that it had caused the crash.
