Some pols try to pay lip service to the idea that the public at large gets to decide who will hold an elected office, or even, if the value of that elected office has been called into question by two independent watchdog groups, whether it should continue to exist. Not Jannie Blackwell! For instance, here's the Councilwoman yesterday on Jewell Williams inheriting the office of the Sheriff:
"It's a consensus that everyone has agreed to in the party. It's kind of a done deal," said City Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell, also leader of West Philadelphia's 46th Ward.
Hear that, Philadelphia? It's done! Stop talking about it!
The Sheriff's Office is responsible for the transport and escort of prisoners to and from courtrooms, conducting real and personal property sales, and serving and executing writs and warrants.
Last year, the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority, which oversees Philadelphia's finances, and the Committee of Seventy separately called for eliminating the office, partly because of high costs and poor financial oversight.
Move along, people. Nothing to see here.
