A section of Market Street in Center City Philadelphia has been closed since about 2 p.m. Friday because of chunks of ice falling from buildings, police said.

The busy downtown street, from 12th to 13th streets, has been closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. No injuries have been reported.

At 12th and Market Streets, Police Sgt. Frank Gillespie, who was directing traffic and pedestrians, said at about 4:40 p.m. that he did not know yet when the 1200 block of Market would reopen.

Ice had been falling from the ledges of the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, he told curious passersby. Traffic in the area was congested during the Friday rush hour because of the detours.
