A man has been charged with murder and other offenses in the November killing of a 2-year-old boy in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia police said Wednesday that 21-year-old Rimear Custis, of Olney, had been charged in the Nov. 30 death of Zyair Worrell.
Custis is the boyfriend of Andrea Worrell, the boy's mother, who was previously been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and obstructing justice.
Authorities have said the boy was abused but have not provided more details about how he died.
On Nov. 29, officers were called to a report of an unresponsive child on the 600 block of East Clementine Street about 11:50 p.m. They were met by Worrell, 23, who was holding Zyair. Her boyfriend was also at the residence.
Zyair was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where he died about two hours later. His death was ruled a homicide.
The child had bruises on his chest and ear, an abrasion over his eye and a large laceration to his liver. He also tested positive for THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, according to police.
Police have not said how the injuries occurred or how the boy came into contact with the drug.
Custis is facing charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. He was being held without bail, according to court records.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 4.
