A woman who was found critically wounded in Philadelphia's Fairhill section late Monday night has died.

Police said the woman was pronounced dead at 8:32 a.m. Tuesday and the homicide unit was investigating the circumstances of her death, which remained murky.

The woman was found on the 2700 block of North 3rd Street at about 11:30 p.m. Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters that she was completely unresponsive and had suffered head trauma and other injuries.

It wasn't immediately known how she had been so severely injured. Preliminary investigation indicated she may have been shot, but that remained unconfirmed Tuesday morning, police said.

Philadelphia Housing Authority officers took the woman to Temple University Hospital, where she was originally listed in critical condition and later died.

Investigators hope that cameras outside nearby businesses provide some information about what happened.
