The Flyers' playoff chances took a severe hit Sunday when the club announced that backup goalie Michal Neuvirth would miss three weeks — the rest of the regular season — with a lower-body injury.

That means Steve Mason will have to carry the heavy load the rest of the way.

The Flyers have 12 games left, including four sets of back-to-back games. They are three points behind Detroit for the final wild-card spot but have two games in hand on the Red Wings.

Neuvirth has a suspected knee injury. He is 17-8-4 with a 2.28 GAA and .925 save percentage, and he and Mason had been expected to alternate the back-to-backs.

Anthony Stolarz, 22, who has never played in an NHL game, was recalled from the Phantoms. Stolarz, a second-round draft pick in 2012, was 19-15-7 with a 2.59 GAA and .916 save percentage with Lehigh Valley this season.

The Flyers also may try to acquire another goalie, though he wouldn't be eligible for the playoffs.
