Restaurant notes: Phillies revive a hot dog; Capital Grille in KoP on the way
Also: New Mexican restaurant in South Philly.
For the postseason, the Phillies have revived the Olde Philadelphia Hot Dog -- one of the signature hot dogs introduced early this season and quickly retired. It's topped with Amish pepper hash, a dill pickle slice, and yellow mustard and served on an Amoroso poppyseed roll. It'll be priced at $5.75 or at $15 for a three-dog combo, including the South Philly (topped with broccoli rabe, spicy roasted peppers, and sharp provolone on a crusty Italian roll) and the Citizens Bank Park Summer Hot Dog (topped with cucumbers, pickled onion salsa, and ancho pepper sauce on a pretzel roll).
Bars hitch their financial stars to the postseason. The blogs Foobooz and Drink Philly have lists of deals. Also, starting Friday (10/8), Devil's Den in South Philly and Old Eagle Tavern in Manayunk are giving away rally towels to their first 50 patrons before each playoff game. Restaurateurs, though, usually complain about dips in business during playoffs or around major events. (Heck, they always complain anyway.) Finding it easier to just join 'em, Trax Cafe in Ambler actually installed a TV for the playoffs.
The suburban meat market is growing as the Capital Grille in King of Prussia opens to the public on Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. It's on the back side of the mall, near the old Toys R Us store.
Cast your eyes to Eighth and Christian Streets near the Italian Market, where Tres Jalapenos is taking shape in the corner property that was Molcajete Mixto and Paxia. (Then Mezza Luna tried to open there in the summer of '09, but matters ended in litigation.) Tres Jalapenos is a week or two out, as it awaits city inspections, says owner Jamie Tapias, who owns the far more casual Taqueria Los Jalapenos at Fourth and Moore Streets in South Philly. Tapias told me that he'll keep most dish prices at $9 to $12 and that the house specialty will be chiles rellenos, including a vegetarian version.
Football star David Beckham did the $100 cheesesteak at Barclay Prime last night while out with a bloke. Spend it like Beckham, indeed.
