Enjoy a not so ordinary Mother’s Day

Even as a mother myself, when Mother’s Day rolls around each year, I find myself wracking my brain for ways to celebrate a holiday that I should naturally have some insight into. No matter how much I enjoy the sleeping in and breakfast in bed or a nice brunch or dinner out at a local restaurant, now that my kids are older I am determined this year to start some new traditions.

Even as a mother myself, when Mother's Day rolls around each year, I find myself wracking my brain for ways to celebrate a holiday that I should naturally have some insight into. No matter how much I enjoy the sleeping in and breakfast in bed or a nice brunch or dinner out at a local restaurant, now that my kids are older I am determined this year to start some new traditions. How about you? Are you looking for a way to make your Mother's Day extra special?

Whether you are looking for something for the whole family or something just for the adults, there are some great events in the area next weekend.

If you enjoy culture and learning about different places and times, then instead of brunch, sip some tea at the Mother's Day Tea Ceremony at the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden on Sunday, May 11 at 2:30 p.m.  Or you can learn more about Victorian times at the Mother's Day Carriage Event at the Cairnwood Estate at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

At the James A. Michener Art Museum, you can create your own book art at the Ladies Day Out on Saturday, Friday, May 10, 6: 30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m..  Make your to bring your own photographs and collage material to put a personal touch on your masterpiece.

For those of you who are adult children looking for a fun way to celebrate with your mom, you can spice the weekend up with a Pre Mother's Day Male Revue Collaboration at L & J Banque Hall on Saturday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m., or spend an afternoon of wine and relaxation at the Mother's Day Wine Tasting at Heritage Vineyards in Harrison Township, NJ. The vineyard is hosting a wine and cheese event on both Saturday, May 10 and Sunday May 11. The Hawthorne IPA Block Party is this coming Saturday too, and would make a fun way to kick off Mother's Day with some cool brews, music and sunshine. Stop by the Hawthorne Café on Saturday between 12 noon and 8 p.m.

A dinner and a show is never a bad choice either.  At First District Plaza on Mother's Day, celebrate with A Big Mother's Day Dinner Show & Dance. The show starts at 5:00 p.m.

Like brunch, but want a new place to try?. Put a little twist in your normal brunch tradition and have it on the Spirit of Philadelphia while cruising on the Delaware River.  Boarding is at 9:30 a.m. and the cruise starts at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 11. No matter what you choose, all these events will put the "extra" in your ordinary Mother's Day celebration.
