Passengers on American Airlines Flight 1822 headed to Philadelphia were forced to evacuate Thursday afternoon while on the taxiway at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida due to a "maintenance issue," American said.

The Airbus 320 with 133 passengers and five crew evacuated the aircraft on the tarmac, using emergency slides, about 3:30 p.m.

Fourteen passengers and three flight attendants sustained minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals, American spokeswoman Victoria Lupica said.

Flight 1822 was canceled.

A passenger, Eric Moore, said the flight crew thought the problem might have been a fuel leak. He said he was later told that the leak was hydraulic fluid, CNN reported. Moore said that passengers were not calm as they left the airplane.

"We are working with our passengers to re-accommodate them, and we apologize for the inconvenience," said Lupica, who added that she was unable to confirm that the maintenance problem was a leak.
