Students from Moorestown Friends School took home seven of the nine prizes handed out in the Burlington County Soil Conservation District poster contest. The New Jersey Association of Conservation Districts sponsors the annual contest, aiming to promote awareness and understanding of the environment. The contest theme this year was "Today Is the Day to Be Part of Conservation's Power." First-place winners earned a shot at the state competition. The state champion will go on to the national contest.

Students earning recognition in the category for 10th through 11th graders included seniors Sarah Van Cleve, first; Michael Puleo, second; and Brittany Brennan, third. In grades seven through nine, awards went to freshmen Ally Shaffer, second; and Gianya Breland, third. From grades four through six, sixth grader Logan Horn took a second and Lauren Carney a third. First-place finishers received $75; second place, $50; and third, $25.

During alumni weekend at Moorestown Friends School on Friday and Saturday, the Alumni Association bestowed awards on two graduates. The Alice Stokes Paul 1901 Merit Award went to Thomas Reed Hedges 3d, from the Class of 1967. The award honors someone who shows a commitment to serving others and aspiring to a high standard in his or her field. Hedges is a distinguished professor of ophthalmology and neurology at the Tufts-New England Eye Center. He has volunteered in the medical communities of Guatemala, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and Cuba. The other honoree was Dudley "Sandy" Heath of Medford Leas, who received the Alumni Association Service Award, which goes to a person who has enhanced Moorestown Friends. Heath worked at the school for 27 years, serving as Upper School director, chairman of the social studies department, track coach, and social studies teacher. He also helped lead such programs as Intensive Learning, the Senior Project, the Mock Presidential Primary, and May Day.

Shawnee High School is accepting nominations for the 2008 Athletic Hall of Fame. Nominees must come from the Classes of 1972 through 1989. Inductees for the 2007 Hall of Fame were: Karen Thorne Alecxih, Vicky Aromando Bersch, Laura Haig Darling, Gordon Galtere, Trish DelFemine Gitt, Kiki Konstantinos, David Miller, William Neal, Bobbie Schultz, Sally Starr and Tom Tofaute.
