We're No. 5 (and dropping)

The city of Philadelphia grew slightly from 2000 to 2010, just enough to stave off Phoenix and retain its claim to being the fifth-largest city in the United States. The Philadelphia metro area wasn't as lucky.

The city of Philadelphia grew slightly from 2000 to 2010, just enough to stave off Phoenix and retain its claim to being the fifth-largest city in the United States.

The Philadelphia metro area wasn't as lucky.

Our 11-county region grew by 5 percent since 2000, and is now home to almost six million residents.

But its rank dropped from fourth to fifth among the top metro areas in the country. The new No. 4 is Dallas, which added more than 1.2 million residents in the last 10 years.

And don't look now, but the Houston metro area, which grew by 26 percent since 2000, is ready to knock Philadelphia down another notch soon.
