A 20-year-old man was found stabbed to death in his South Philadelphia apartment yesterday afternoon.

Anthony DiMatteo was sliced numerous times with a sword after he argued and tussled with two young men he apparently knew, said Homicide Sgt. Tim Cooney.

DiMatteo was pronounced dead inside his apartment, on Porter Street near Carlisle, shortly after 2:30 p.m.

Investigators found a bloodstained sword discarded in a trash can.

Witnesses saw two men fleeing DiMatteo's apartment, Cooney said.

Both were described as black men in their late teens or early 20s. One was said to be about 5 foot 4 with a boxy hair cut, wearing a white shirt and jeans; the second was 5 foot 8 and was wearing a red T-shirt.

Cooney said the nature of the dispute was unclear. Neighbors told police they had heard DiMatteo arguing and then struggling with both men in his apartment.

DiMatteo was arrested last year on drug charges that were later withdrawn, according to court records. *
