The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation today will honor five city police officers who have been killed in the line of duty since May 2006.
Recipients of the Legion of Honor Award are Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski and Officers Gary Skerski, Charles "Chuck" Cassidy, Isabel Nazario and Patrick McDonald. Walter Barclay Jr., whose death in August 2007 resulted from his being shot on duty in 1966, also will be honored. The ceremony, at the Four Chaplains Chapel in the Navy Yard, begins at 1 p.m.
David Cohen tapped for Penn
David L. Cohen, executive vice president of Comcast Corp., has been nominated to chair the board of trustees of the University of Pennsylvania. He will replace James S. Riepe, board chairman since 1999.
Fireworks show saved
The annual New Year's fireworks spectacle will go on as planned at Penn's Landing, thanks to several local businesses and a political leader.
According to Joe Brooks, acting president of the Penn's Landing Corp. (PLC), state Rep. Dennis O'Brien arranged for $20,000 in state funding in August, and local businesses PRWT Services Inc., Hyatt Regency Philadelphia and the Moshulu restaurant donated money. PLC raised $75,000 for the spectacle.
Fundraiser for hit-run victim
Friends and family of Brian Hickey are hosting a fundraiser for the former managing editor of the City Paper who was struck by a hit-run driver while walking to a PATCO stop in Collingswood Friday night.
The fundraiser will begin at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at The Tap Room, at 427 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Haddon Township, N.J. Tickets are $25 at the door and $20 in advance.
Bucks teacher honored
Maryann Molishus, a teacher at Goodnoe Elementary School in Newtown, Bucks County, has received the National Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation, which has been honoring outstanding teachers since 1987. Molishus, a 2000 graduate of Holy Family University, is one of two teachers in Pennsylvania to receive this honor, which comes with a $25,000 award.
Man slain in Camden
Ikeem Williams, 20, of Camden, was found shot to death about 1:45 p.m. yesterday on the sidewalk on South 4th Street in Camden's Bergen Square neighborhood. He had been shot multiple times, police said. *
