Northwest Philly man becomes city's first heat death

Officials said the man had a working box fan, but that an air-conditioning unit was not being used.

A 57-YEAR-OLD Northwest Philadelphia man who was found dead early yesterday has been recorded as the city's first heat-related death of the year.

City Health Department spokesman Jeff Moran said the man, whose name was not released, was found inside his home with a working box fan and an open window. An air-conditioning unit inside the home was not being used, Moran said.

He said the man was last seen alive Tuesday by neighbors.

Yesterday's temperature peaked at 99 degrees, marking five straight days of temperatures above 90. The temperature today is expected to reach the mid 90s.
