Your trash and recyclables can be put out at 5 p.m.

The change will allow residents and store owners to take advantage of daylight hours.

RESIDENTS and store owners no longer have to wait until 7 p.m. to put out their trash and recyclables for next-day pickup. From today through March 31, the stuff can be put out as early as 5 p.m.

Acting Streets Commissioner David J. Perri said the change will allow people to put these items out while it's still daylight.

The setout time will return to 7 p.m. from April 1 to Sept. 30.

Perri also announced that starting Dec. 1, mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in mattress covers to be collected. The reason is to protect against the spread of bedbugs, Perri said.

He noted that mattress bags are available at many retail stores and online.
