WHEN A BLAZE begins to burn, here's how things are supposed to work:

*  Firefighters who enter structures to battle flames from within travel in threes - two firefighters and a lieutenant or captain.

* The supervisor sticks close to the firefighter spraying the hose, directing the firefight and communicating via radio to the chief outside.

* The second firefighter maneuvers the hose line, ensures it doesn't kink and otherwise assists the hose-sprayer.

* A fourth firefighter stays outside to drag hose line to the hydrant, operate the truck's pump panel and otherwise keep the water flowing.
