Steve Devlin, a longtime assistant at St. Joseph's Prep, has been named the head football coach at Archbishop Wood.

After a long process that included two declined offers, Devlin took the job earlier this week.

Devlin replaced Joe Powel, who won three Catholic League Blue Division titles in four years at Wood. Powel left in the off-season for Upper Merion.

"When Joe left, the school administration and the athletic department were determined that when the decision was made it was the right move," said Wood athletic director Joe Sette.

In February, Wood reportedly offered the job to Pennridge assistant Bob Rosenberger and then earlier this week to Wood assistant Joe McFadden. But both declined for unspecified reasons. Sette declined to elaborate.

"We wanted the search to be open," said Sette, "and we veered our way through to get to Steve."

Devlin, who was formally introduced to the players earlier this week, did not return a phone call yesterday for comment.
