Rick Majerus

was introduced yesterday as the new men's basketball coach at St. Louis.

He replaces the fired Brad Soderberg, who won 20 games in the last of his five seasons but failed to earn even an NIT bid in the last three years.

Majerus, who left coaching three years ago because of health concerns, had been an ESPN analyst. He agreed to a six-year contract Friday.

"I saw this as an opportunity," the 59-year-old coach said at a news conference. "I don't think I forgot how to do it. I love practice and I love the kids and I like the game."

Majerus led Utah to 10 NCAA appearances in 15 seasons. He also has coached at Ball State and Marquette. He has a career record of 422-147.

He accepted the Southern California job in December 2004 only to change his mind three days later.

Suzy Merchant, former coach of Eastern Michigan, was named the new women's basketball coach at Michigan State.

Cherokee High senior Ben Flanary, a 6-foot-6, power-hitting first baseman, has committed to attend Temple on a baseball scholarship.
