Providence beat St. Joseph's, 9-4, for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse championship yesterday at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Friars (6-9 overall, 5-3 MAAC) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with the victory. They will meet top-seeded Duke (14-2) Saturday in Durham, N.C.

Steve Varga's goal gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes, 1 second left the first period, but the Friars scored twice near the end of the period to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Varga scored again in the fourth quarter for the Hawks (6-12, 6-4). Mike O'Neill and Alex McColough also tallied for St. Joe's.

Blue Hens earn NCAA bid. Delaware earned an NCAA bid Saturday, winning its first Colonial Athletic Association title by beating Towson, 10-7.

The Blue Hens (11-5) will meet second-seeded Virginia (12-3) Sunday in Charlottesville.
