Widener used stout defense, timely scoring and good fortune to advance to the second round of the Division III men's lacrosse tournament.
The visiting Pride held Ohio-based Denison to two second-half goals and beat the Big Red, 8-5. Widener next will play at top-seeded Salisbury on Saturday.
Luke Weber, Brian Stromko and Clint Quedenfeld each had two goals for Widener (13-5), which tied the school single-season record for victories.
The turning point came when Denison's Dan Maude had a goal nullifed early in the second half because he was using an illegal stick. Weber scored 34 seconds later to turn what would have been a 4-3 deficit into a 4-3 lead. *
