In women's basketball, as in any sport, it's always nice to get off to a good start.

Last night, Laura Kurz scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the game's first 5 minutes to help lead Villanova to a 71-47 victory over visiting Saint Joseph's.

The Wildcats (7-1 overall, 3-0 Big 5) jumped out to a 29-19 lead and closed out the first half with an 18-7 run to take a 46-26 lead at intermission.

Villanova, which has won six straight, is now tied with St. Joe's for the most wins in women's Big 5 history with 84.

The Wildcats were also led by Lisa Karcic who had 19 points, seven assists, four blocks and three steals, and Maria Getty, who added 14 points. Karcic and Getty made four three-pointers each. The Wildcats lead the nation in threes, averaging 10.9 a game.

Villanova's final Big 5 game is Dec. 21 against Temple, which has yet to play a City Series contest.

The Hawks (5-3, 1-1) were led by Amy Gillespie, who had 13 points and Sarah Acker, who added 12.

* At Temple, Candice Borrows scored 12 points and Lady Comfort, Ashley Morris and Shanea Cotton each added 11 as the Owls (4-5) drummed Kent State, 74-34.

Anna Kowalska had 12 points for KSU (1-6).

* At Penn, Emily Garner scored 20 points and Vanessa Van De Venter added 19 to lead Lafayette (6-3) to a 71-56 victory over Penn.

Carrie Biemer scored 20 points for the Quakers (3-5). *
