One day after releasing safety Marcus Paschal and signing offensive tackle Pat McCoy from the practice squad, the Eagles released McCoy and re-signed Paschal.

It's a health issue.

After Brian Dawkins injured his back in practice Friday, the Eagles decided yesterday that they needed insurance in case the veteran safety is unable to play today against the New York Giants.

Dawkins suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly after going up for an interception. He immediately left practice and later was added to the team's injury report as questionable.

If Dawkins cannot play, J.R. Reed likely will step in as the starter, with Quintin Mikell returning from a knee injury to play strong safety after missing the last two games.

Dawkins missed five games earlier this season with a neck injury, and Sean Considine was placed on injured reserve after dislocating his shoulder last month against Dallas.
