Funeral arrangements have been set for Joseph "Hank" Greenberg, patriarch of one of the region's most amazing sports-crazed families.
Greenberg, 81, died Saturday after several years of failing health.
Hank and his wife, Mary, raised 12 children - Mary Kay, Carol, Joe, Jim, Sue, Jerry, Greg, Tucker, Chip, John, Kelly and Kathy - and every one played at least one varsity sport at Bishop McDevitt, La Salle, Archbishop Wood or Abington.
The major focus was basketball. Chip, of La Salle, in 1982 was the Daily News' City Player of the Year, then starred at La Salle University. Kelly and Kathy starred at Wood, then did likewise at La Salle and Rhode Island, respectively.
Kelly is in her fourth year as Boston University's head coach after 5 at Penn. Kathy is a prominent high school and college referee.
Hank and his brother, Charley, played college ball at La Salle. Charley was Father Judge's head coach for 11 seasons ending in 1974 and is an officer with the Markward Basketball Club, which honors city high school players.
A viewing will be held tomorrow, 6 to 9 p.m., at Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, 1500 Marian Road, Abington, Pa. Another viewing will be held 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday, with the Funeral Mass to follow. *
