OTTAWA - Alexander Ovechkin had four goals and an assist to lead the Washington Capitals to an 8-6 win over the Ottawa Senators last night.

The Russian star, who needed stitches to close a left leg cut one night earlier, scored a power-play goal 4 minutes, 45 seconds in to put Washington up 2-0. He added his second of the game early in the second before completing his first hat trick of the season in the third.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Nikolai Zherdev scored two spectacular goals and had a career-best four points to help Columbus beat Carolina.

Scoreless early in the second period, Zherdev circled behind his net to gather a full head of steam for the coast-to-coast rush.

Late in the second, Rick Nash chipped a long backhand pass from his zone to send Zherdev on a breakaway behind defenseman Mike Commodore. Zherdev faked forehand, then beat Ward with a high, backhand shot that sent the water bottle in the air at 14:02.

PITTSBURGH - Ty Conklin, in the minors a month ago, won his fourth in a row and Sidney Crosby set up both Pittsburgh goals to help the Penguins blank Buffalo.

The victory came at a cost: Gary Roberts, the Penguins' 41-year-old forward, broke his left leg after becoming tangled with Buffalo's Tim Connolly in the left circle midway through the second period and both went to the ice awkwardly. The Penguins are uncertain how long Roberts will be out.

NASHVILLE - Matthew Carle and Steve Bernier each had a goal and an assist to help San Jose beat Nashville for its franchise-record ninth straight road game.
