NEW YORK - Just when the slumping New York Yankees got Alex Rodriguez back, Derek Jeter went down with an injury that nearly led to a brawl with Baltimore.
Adam Jones hit a three-run double during Baltimore's seven-run first inning against Mike Mussina, as the Orioles routed New York, 12-2, last night in a testy game that included a homer by A-Rod in his return from the disabled list. Mussina (6-4) got only two outs against his former team - matching the shortest start of his 18-year career.
The Orioles took advantage of a two-out throwing error by Jeter in the first to build a big cushion for Daniel Cabrera (5-1), who handed the Yankees (20-25) their fourth straight loss and sixth in seven games.
Kevin Millar and Luke Scott added tack-on homers for the surprising Orioles, who have won eight of 10. Jones finished with a career-high four hits and four RBIs.
With Baltimore up by 9-0 in the third, Cabrera hit Jeter on the left hand with a 2-1 pitch and the shortstop spun away in pain. Jeter was quickly removed from the game. X-rays were negative; he is listed as day-to-day with a bruised hand.
In the sixth, New York reliever LaTroy Hawkins threw one pitch inside to Scott and then the next one over his head. Hawkins was ejected, and both benches emptied, but no punches were thrown.

TORONTO - John Lackey won for the first time since Sept. 28, pitching seven strong innings to help Los Angeles get a rare victory in Toronto.
Casey Kotchman broke a 1-1 tie by doubling home Torii Hunter in the third inning, and the Angels snapped a four-game road losing streak in a ballpark where they have struggled in recent years.
Los Angeles, loser of 14 of 16 in Toronto coming in, improved to 19-38 at Rogers Centre since 1996.

The Red Sox scored twice in the second inning, on Julio Lugo's sacrifice fly and Coco Crisp's ground-rule double.
