Are we witnessing a changing of the major-sport guard at St. Joseph's Prep?

The answer is probably no, considering that the football squad has appeared in every Catholic Red title game in this decade and is expected to again be strong come fall.

However, baseball is certainly making inroads. Coach Chris Rupertus' squad has earned a third consecutive trip to the championship game and is hoping to repeat its '07 success.

Today at 4 o'clock at Widener University, the Hawks will meet Monsignor Bonner, which will be making its first title-game appearance since a 1989 visit produced a 5-3 win over La Salle.

The most amazing moment in that one came when South MVP Jack McCoy, relegated to spot duty because of a broken hand, smacked an RBI single while wearing a cast.

Prep and Bonner split during the Red regular season. Bonner triumphed, 6-4, on April 15 as senior lefty Conor Kerins, the Red MVP, struck out 13 and helped himself with two RBI. The Prep won 2 days later, 5-1, as senior righthander Aaron Haas (also the football quarterback) scattered seven hits.

The Hawks own seven major sport titles this decade - football in '01, '02, '03 and '05; basketball in '03 and '04; baseball in '07. Roman claimed nine in the '90s - one, seven and one, respectively. *
