and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a one-year contract yesterday, meaning the 45-year-old pitcher will go for his 300th win with a new team.

Johnson, a 21-year big-league veteran who spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was born in Walnut Creek, Calif., about 30 minutes from the Giants' waterfront ballpark.

The five-time Cy Young Award winner has 295 victories after going 11-10 with a 3.91 ERA in 30 starts last season.

was hired as Army's football coach yesterday, joining a team that hasn't had a winning record since 1996.

He replaces

Stan Brock

, who was fired Dec. 12 after a pair of 3-9 seasons. This season concluded with a 34-0 loss to Navy.

Under Ellerson, Cal Poly made it to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs four times. He was 56-34 in his eight years at Cal Poly.

Michigan State has agreed to a revised contract with football coach

The university announced the deal in Florida, where the Spartans are preparing to play Georgia in the Capital One Bowl on New Year's Day.

Dantonio's contract remains a five-year rollover deal with a base salary of $618,000. His overall compensation will rise to $1.8 million a year, up from $1.13 million.

The Spartans are 9-3 in Dantonio's second season. His overall record with them is 16-9.

The rematch of last season's NBA Finals earned a 5.3 fast national rating on ABC, the network said. The rating is the percentage of those watching a program in homes with televisions.

The rating for the Lakers' 92-83 victory, which snapped Boston's 19-game winning streak, was 51 percent higher than the 3.5 mark for last year's late Christmas game between the Lakers and the Phoenix Suns.
