Malvern Prep senior catcher Mike Lubanski has been named Pennsylvania's Gatorade baseball player of the year.

Lubanski batted .354 with three home runs, 24 RBI and 27 runs scored for the 22-6 Friars, winners of the Pennsylvania Independent School championship. He batted .371 in his Malvern career.

"Lubanski has been so consistent for us ever since he got here," Malvern coach Mike Hickey said. "He works extremely hard to make himself better and he really has become a complete baseball player."

Lubanski, who has a 3.3 grade-point average and will attend Wake Forest in the fall, is a finalist for the national player of the year award.

He is the third player from Malvern selected for the state award. The others were shortstop Josh McKinley (1998) and catcher Ben Davis (1995). *
