Neumann-Goretti, St. Joseph's Prep set for state baseball quarterfinals

Admit it. If you had been asked early last September to pinpoint two teams that would have strong chances to win state championships in this, the Catholic League's first year of full-fledged PIAA membership, you might have gone with St. Joseph's Prep in football and Ss. Neumann-Goretti in basketball.

Neither squad was able to succeed, but both schools - thank goodness for baseball - still have hopes.

Second-round games will be played today, weather permitting, and since the assorted diamond tourneys include just 16 teams per classification, they will be quarterfinals.

In AAA, N-G will meet Twin Valley in a noon contest at Spring-Ford High, in Royersford. The Prep, which competes in AAAA, will face West Chester East at 4 o'clock at Glen Mills, in Concordville.

N-G is expected to start junior lefty Mark Donato. The call for the Prep likely will go to senior righthander Kevin Gillen.

The semifinals in each class will take place Monday. *
