Quakertown junior Jayson Rathjens isn't able to throw due to a recent finger injury, but it hasn't affected his hitting.

Rathjens had a three-run home run and four RBIs yesterday as the Suburban One League American/Continental beat South Jersey's Olympic/Colonial, 10-7, in the first game of the 24th annual Carpenter Cup baseball tournament at the University of Pennsylvania's Meiklejohn Stadium.

The SOL American/Continental will meet South Jersey's Tri-Cape in Thursday's 9 a.m. quarterfinal at Meiklejohn Stadium.

Rathjens was used as a designated hitter because his right index finger recently required 20 stitches.

"It doesn't hurt when I bat, but when I throw there is a lot of pain," he said. "It felt great to hit it because I was really nervous."

His three-run home run to right-center field was part of a six-run fifth inning.

The Olympic/Colonial, with five, has won the most Carpenter Cup titles but hasn't won an opening-round game since 2001. In the second inning the Olympic-Colonial was staked to a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Paulsboro junior rightfielder Casey Grimes.

Tri-Cape used an outstanding pitching performance to advance with yesterday's 3-2 win over Delaware North. Consisting of teams from the Tri-County and Cape-Atlantic League, Tri-Cape allowed just one hit and no runs after surrendering a two-run single in the first inning to Salesianum sophomore first baseman Greg Rostick.

Middle Township senior lefthander Scott DeCecco pitched two shutout innings. Hammonton junior Josh Carty added a shutout inning, and Cumberland junior righthander Andrew Owens pitched three scoreless frames before Holy Spirit junior righthander Tyler Petsch threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.

In the third game, Jersey Shore, from Ocean and Monmouth Counties, contributed to the Public League's woes with a 15-0 victory. The game ended after seven innings due to lightning and rain.
