Defending champion Michael McDermott of Merion took a 2-and-1 victory over Brian Gillespie of St. Davids during match play in the Golf Association of Philadelphia's 100th Amateur Championship yesterday at Stonewall's Old Course in Elverson, Chester County.
Among those also advancing were former New Jersey state amateur champion Thomas Gramigna of Tavistock, who beat Matthew Mattare of Saucon Valley, 3 and 2; and Conrad Von Borsig of Concord, who defeated William McGuinness of Tavistock in 19 holes.
Doug Marcincin of Northampton, Ryan McCarty of Little Mill, Chet Walsh of Philadelphia Country Club, Jeffrey Griest of Waynesborough, and Justin Martinson of Hartefeld National also advanced.
The tournament will continue today and conclude with a a 36-hole round Saturday.
