BOSTON - Five Flyers - Claude Giroux, Jon Kalinski, James van Riemsdyk, Darroll Powe, and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen - and their coaches toured fabled Fenway Park yesterday to see the progress being made for the NHL Winter Classic.
The Flyers will face the Boston Bruins on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. on NBC.
Construction of the rink at the ballpark has started and is scheduled to be finished in about a week. The rink's boards and glass are scheduled to be installed today.
"Playing here for the Winter Classic is going to be awesome," said Flyers coach Peter Laviolette, who is a Massachusetts native. "You go out there and stand on the rink, even though the ice isn't in yet, you take a look around and you just know it is going to be a pretty good day."
"There is so much history to this place and I can't wait to play here," Giroux said.
"You've seen this field on TV so many times and you've seen a lot of big games played there. Just to be on the field and looking around is pretty cool," he said.
"This will be an outdoor game, something you did all the time as a kid. But now it will be on a bigger stage."
