Great Valley's Gary Phillips has been dismissed after 17 seasons as the school's head football coach.

"It's one of those personnel things that I can't really comment on," Russell Wren, Great Valley's athletic director, said when reached Thursday.

This season, the Patriots went 3-8 overall and 2-3 in the Ches-Mont League American Conference.

Phillips, a teacher at the school, first confirmed the development, but did not respond to later requests for comment.

Great Valley's best season in recent history came in 2004, when the squad, competing on the old Southern Chester County League, went 13-1 and advanced to the first round of the PIAA Class AAA state playoffs (also the interdistrict final) before losing to Upper Merion, 20-19.

The head-coaching vacancy is listed on Great Valley School District's Web site.
