Tues. Pa. girls’ roundup: W.C. East ekes out semifinal win

Brianna Andraos pitched a one-hit shutout, but West Chester East needed a seventh-inning run from pinch-runner Amber McNeila to escape with a 1-0 win over Radnor in the semifinals of the District 1 Class AAA softball tournament at Phoenixville on Tuesday.

In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Allie Viguers poked a lead-off single. McNeila ran for Viguers, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. When a play was made to throw her out at third, the ball went into left field, allowing McNeila to score.

Radnor's best threat came in the fifth with a runner on first base. On a sacrifice bunt, the ball was thrown into right field, but rightfielder Ali Cipollone threw out the runner by throwing to leftfielder Lindsay Orton, who came in to cover the base.

Andraos struck out six and walked three, while Radnor's Christy VonPusch fanned seven and gave up three hits.

In the other semifinal, top-seeded and unbeaten Nazareth Academy (23-0) got another dominating performance by Erica Cipolloni during an 11-1 five-inning semifinal triumph over No. 4 seed Sun Valley at Villa Maria.

Cipolloni (18-0), headed to the University of Virginia in the fall, pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts among the 15 outs, and helped herself by rapping a single, double and triple for four runs batted in.

Mel Kalesse also went 3 for 3 and knocked in three runs.

District 1 Class AAAA. Haileigh Stocks hit a two-run homer and scored on a foul popup to account for Central Bucks South's runs in a 3-0 semifinal win over Coatesville at Upper Merion.

Fran Carrullo pitched a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk to put the Titans in the title game on Thursday.

Stocks belted a two-run homer over the left-field fence in the third inning, and doubled in the sixth. After Stocks moved to third, Dani London hit a foul popup near the dugout and Stocks tagged up and beat the short throw to the plate for the final run.

Hatboro-Horsham pitcher Maggie Shaffer fashioned a 3-0 two-hit shutout over Bishop Shanahan at Perkiomen Valley.

Shaffer struck out five, and the Hatters scored twice in the fifth inning as Heather Lutz went home on a passed ball and Christina James singled in Megan Kelly.

Radnor broke open a close game by outscoring North Penn, 8-3, in the second half for a 10-4 victory at West Chester East in the first round of the PIAA state championships.

Allie Martin ignited the Red Raiders with four goals, and Courtney Campbell and Ellie Kraus added two each.

Also in the first round, Archbishop Carroll cruised past Great Valley, 20-12, at Plymouth Whitemarsh behind Aimie Gennaro's six goals and Hannah Schmitt's five among eight Patriots scorers.

Unionville followed Lindsey Smith's five goals and Melissa Lloyd's 10-save goaltending to a 21-4 success against Hershey at Penn Manor.

At Emmaus, Downingtown East crushed District 11 champ Nazareth, 20-5, as Christine Stevenson and Haley Nelson each had five goals and an assist.
