The Soul on Tuesday added all-Arena defensive back Tanner Varner to the roster for the 2011 season.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Varner joins another all-Arena player, wide receiver Donovan Morgan. He led the AFL last season with 1291/2 total tackles, 113 solo tackles, and eight interceptions for the Iowa Barnstormers.

"Tanner Varner represents the physical presence we are looking for on the defensive side of the ball," Soul head coach Mike Hohensee said.

As a college player at Northern Iowa, Varner was named first team all-American and all-Gateway Conference in 2005 and defensive MVP in the 1-AA national championship game.

The Soul will open their 2011 season at the Pittsburgh Power on March 11. Home games will be played at the Wells Fargo Center.
