Sports in Brief: Wie wins in Hawaii, ending long drought

Michelle Wie overcame a 4-stroke deficit, firing off a final-round 67 to win the LPGA Lotte Championship in Kapolei, Hawaii.

Anglea Stanford came into Saturday with a 4-stroke lead, but Wie evaporated the advantage by the turn, tying Stanford at 12 under par on the eighth hole.

On the back nine, Wie took over. The 24-year-old carded six birdies with only a solo bogey on 18, giving Wie (-15) her first LPGA victory since August 2010.

The win is not only Wie's first LPGA win on Hawaiian soil, but also her first victory in the United States.

Luke Donald shot a 66 to take a 2-stroke lead over John Huh after three rounds of the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Donald had an eagle and six birdies to finish at 8-under 205 and carry the lead into Sunday. Huh shot a 68 and was at 6 under. Major champions Charl Schwartzel (68), Jim Furyk (71), Nicholas Thompson (68), and Ben Martin (71) were tied for third at 5 under. Donald's performance capped a long day at soggy Harbour Town, where 65 golfers had to finish the second round before the third could begin with K.J. Choi, Furyk, and Ben Martin tied for the lead.

TENNIS Roger Federer ousted defending Monte Carlo Masters champion Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-2, and the Serb said he plans to take a break to let his injured wrist heal. Federer will try to win the event for the first time in an all-Swiss final against Stanislas Wawrinka, who defeated David Ferrer of Spain 6-1, 7-6 (3).

HORSE RACING Mr Speaker took charge down the stretch to win the $200,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday and earn 10 points toward the Kentucky Derby, but will be a spectator to the Triple Crown. With just 17 total points at stake in this Grade 3 race and facing a two-week turnaround before the 140th Derby on May 3, the winner was a long shot for Churchill Downs.

GYMNASTICS Defending champion Florida and first-time winner Oklahoma shared the NCAA women's gymnastics title with scores of 198.175 in the Super Six on Saturday night in Birmingham, Ala. It's the first time the sport has had co-champions. There is no tiebreaker. That left both teams celebrating on the podium. Florida finished with a pair of 9.95s on the floor exercise and Oklahoma also had two on the vault.

SOCCER In another twist to this unpredictable English Premier League season, last-place Sunderland damaged Chelsea's title hopes with a 2-1 upset at Stamford Bridge. After surprise losses to Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in recent weeks, Chelsea again stuttered against weaker opposition, as Jose Mourinho's 77-match unbeaten home run as Chelsea boss came to an end in a major boost for league leader Liverpool.
