1. Monroe County Bug Fest. Stroudsburg, Pa. July 11. An event celebrating crawling and flying critters with educational displays and activities, puppet shows, arts and crafts, and an insect Olympics. 570-629-3061; www.mcconservation.org.

4. Capital Fringe Festival. Washington, D.C. July 9-26. Audiences can choose from more than 500 inventive performances of theatre, dance, music, poetry, and puppetry, performed by more than 120 local, national and international artists at more than 30 of the city's unique venues. 202-737-7230 www.capfringe.org.

5, Taste of Buffalo. July 11-12. Buffalo, N.Y. At one of the largest two-day food festivals in the nation, visitors can sample Indian, Polish, Italian, Chinese, Irish, and Caribbean fare. 716-983-0978; www.tasteofbuffalo.com.

6. Native American Festival and Basketmakers Market. Bar Harbor, Maine. July 11. A gathering of Native American artists where baskets, carvings, beadwork, dolls, and other of handmade items will be for sale. 7. Balloon Festival and Fair. Hillsborough, N.H. July 9-12. Colorful hot-air balloons soar over the countryside during this four-day event. Listen to country and western performers, take part in a carnival midway, and browse vendors. 603-464-0377; www.balloonfestival.org.

8. 40th Annual Whaling City Festival. New Bedford, Mass. July 10-12. Celebration of the city's whaling history with exhibits, discussions, tours, international food vendors, and live musical performances. 508-979-1745; www.whalingcityfestival.com.

9. Sheepdog Trial and Farm Festival. Rupert, Vt. July 11-12. Led by handlers, sheepdogs are directed through a course of gates and pens during this canine competition where herding talents are demonstrated. There's also a children's fishing derby and wagon rides. 802-394-7836; www.merchforest.org.

10. New Deal Festival. Arthurdale, W.Va. July 11. Take part in a celebration of a New Deal homestead community with an antique car and tractor show, artisan demonstrations, a visit from "Eleanor Roosevelt," and a horseshoe-pitching tournament. 304-864-3959; www.arthurdaleheritage.org.
