Utila is among Honduras' Bay Islands, about 18 miles north of the mainland. There is a landing strip for flights from the Bay Islands, but unpredictable weather makes scheduling uncertain.
Your best bet is to arrive on the Utila Princess passenger ferry, with twice-daily service to and from the mainland port of La Ceiba for about $21.
Honduras' major airports are Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa (TGU) and Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula (SAP). American, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways fly into both airports from Philadelphia with one stop. The lowest recent round-trip fare was about $638 into Morales.
Affordable luxury bus service is available to and from La Ceiba.
Modest, affordable accommodations and eateries abound, as do dive shops and opportunities for scuba certification. For information, go to Utila's official Web site, www.aboututila.com.
You can rent a bicycle or motor scooter, though most of the island's populated areas are accessible via long, slow walks.
