The definitive iPhone app for learning about and touring Normandy, France, and D-Day sites.
Name: Normandy D-Day 1944
Available for: iOS
What it does: Offers practical travel tips and historical information for visiting the five invasion beaches, pluus 100 other locations throughout Normandy. The information is categorized and color-coded by topic: museums, battlegrounds, memorials, cemeteries, and historical interest.
What's hot: The content was written by journalists who specialize in battlefield tourism, and every location has been visited and researched by the developer, On the Spot Locations. There are also 500 photographs you can zoom into. You can access the information offline and use it online as well (but watch out for roaming troubles). Make sure you take advantage of the "Favorites" section so you can plan your trip in advance.
What's not: It took me a long time to load the app. It is more than 50 megabytes, and you need a Wi-Fi connection to download it. Make sure you do this at home before you take off on your trip. It will save you time and, most likely, be quicker than using the hotel Wi-Fi.
Worth it: Pricey, but it's a great way to learn about the Normandy landing. It's also good for assisting with school history projects or homework.
