Seven wreaths - one each for the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, merchant marine, and troops who were prisoners of war or are missing in action - were placed last weekend at the flagpole at the entrance of Beverly National Cemetery as part of "Wreaths Across America."
More than 30,000 wreaths were laid Dec. 15 at 270 military cemeteries across the country, including Arlington National Cemetery. The event was launched by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Maine and supplemented by public donations through the Civil Air Patrol.
Beverly's ceremony, coordinated by Capt. Patrick Rutherford of the Air Force auxiliary, featured piper Curt Anderson of Bordentown playing "Flowers of the Forest" and "Amazing Grace." Speakers included State Sen. Diane Allen (R., Burlington), Burlington County Freeholder James Wujcik, and Beverly Mayor Jean Wetherill.
