The Vampire Diaries (8 p.m., CW57) - Vampires have birthdays? Shouldn't that be undeath-days? In this episode, Stefan (Paul Wesley) gets a visit from an old friend, Lexi (Arielle Kebbel, The Uninvited). The visitor also offers some relationship advice to Elena (Nina Dobrev).

Live From Lincoln Center (9 p.m., WHYY TV12) - Baritone Thomas Hampson helps new music director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic usher in the new year with an all-American program that includes George Gershwin's An American in Paris and Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring and Old American Songs. Alec Baldwin hosts.

NBC's New Year's Eve With Carson Daly (10 p.m., NBC10) - Guy Lombardo's gone, Dick Clark is the elder statesman of Dec. 31, and the Total Request Live emcee-turned-Last Call host is courting the next generation with his own New Year's Eve special. A Green Day concert from Los Angeles is a highlight.

Billboard's New Year's Eve Live (11 p.m., Fox 29) - Much of the music in Fox's celebration from Las Vegas comes in the form of Billboard Music Awards footage. But fresh or recycled, it's a great lineup. Among live highlights, American Idol alums Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta and singer/rapper Sean Kingston are slated to perform. Carmen Electra hosts.

Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2010 (11:30 p.m., 6ABC) - Musical performances and reports from around New York and the country fill the time until midnight strikes and the ball drops in Times Square. At this writing, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and the Black Eyed Peas were among the artists scheduled to perform.
