An arrest warrant on charges of reckless endangerment has been issued for a Northeast Philadelphia man accused of sending his estranged wife's Corvette into the Delaware River on Monday night, police said.
John Kramer, 50, of Mayfair, also faces charges of harassment and violating a protection of abuse order in the incident, which sent police divers into murky water to search for the car, police said.
Kramer and his wife are going through a divorce, police said, and his wife told police Monday night she believed her husband, who had keys to the car, had taken the Corvette.
Police were called to the 5000 block of Magee Avenue that afternoon, where a witness said they'd seen a man drive a car to the banks of the Delaware, then get out with the engine still running, letting the red 1990 Corvette plunge into the river. The man fled on foot, the witness told police.
Police said divers had to check for any trapped passengers. They had to use their hands to feel inside the car - visibility in the water was almost nonexistent - to make sure that no one trapped inside. No one was hurt in the search, police said.
Kramer had not yet been arrested Tuesday night, police said. Attempts to reach him Tuesday were unsuccessful.
