Sixteen people were hospitalized after becoming ill at a Delaware County office building where some reported an unusual odor Wednesday afternoon.

Delaware County dispatchers said medics were called to the International Plaza complex at 2 Scott Way shortly after noon for the strange odor.

The 16 people hospitalized were complaining of dizziness and respiratory problems, though none were seriously sickened, said Ed Beebe, deputy director of emergency services for Delaware County. A handful of others were evaluated at the scene but not taken to medical centers.

The odor was believed to be coming from the heater or boiler room, Beebe said, and the smell dissipated after equipment was shut off.

The cause remains under investigation.
