A motorcyclist died overnight in Feltonville after he was fatally hit by a vehicle that fled the scene.

The striking SUV was located a few blocks from the crash and investigators said they had developed a person of interest by Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, when a 2000 GMC Yukon heading north on the 4800 block of Whitaker Avenue struck  "practically head on" a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle that was traveling south, said Capt. Patrick Kelly of the Accident Investigation Division.

The motorcyclist, identified Wednesday afternoon as 58-year-old Raul Perez, of Feltonville, was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. He was pronounced dead there at 12:10 a.m.

The SUV left the scene and was located unoccupied nearby. Officers followed a trail of fluid from the crash scene to find the heavily damaged Yukon in an alley off the 5500 block of Rorer Street, police said.

The vehicle's license plate had been removed, which likely happened after the crash, police said.

Kelly said investigators had been in contact with the SUV's owner, and the owner was not the person of interest in the hit-and-run.

He didn't provide further information about the suspect, but said police hoped the person would come forward and tell investigators what happened.

Police were also talking to residents of the area, looking for surveillance video and processing the vehicle, Kelly said, noting the investigation into the circumstances of the crash was "still in the early stages."
