Wildwood considers referendum on free beaches

Wildwood is considering a referendum on imposing beach fees, joining the ranks of resorts at the Shore that charge visitors to get to the surf and sand, the Press of Atlantic City reports.

Wildwood is considering a referendum on imposing beach fees, joining the ranks of resorts at the Shore that charge visitors to get to the surf and sand, the Press of Atlantic City reports.

But Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. says the beaches will remain free this year, the newspaper reports.

At a city commissioners meeting Wednesday night, Troiano said a listing under new business for a beach fees referendum was intended to start a discussion about the possibility of taking the question to residents.

"The public should have the right to determine what we do," Troiano said, according to the Press.

Free beaches are part of the tourism market campaign for the Wildwoods and imposing a feed could meet opposition.

But other Shore resorts, notably Ocean City, charge for beach tags to cover the cost of lifeguards and beach maintenance with no apparent impact on business.
